How tokenization works

Visa Token Service (VTS) is a security technology that replaces sensitive account details with a unique token, enabling secure payments without revealing the actual account information.
Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES) is the only integrated platform for issuers, wallet providers, merchants, and token requesters to digitize supported Mastercard card types for multiple digital payment methods.
Secure Card on File (SCOF) is the network tokenization solution that replaces primary account numbers with token values to enable fast, secure, and convenient payments.

Tokenization supports key use cases, including Card on File, which allows merchants to store customer payment data for recurring transactions securely.

Tokenization status

Status Description
INACTIVE Network token is created but not activated.
ACTIVE Network token is activated and can be used for transaction processing.
SUSPENDED Network token is temporarily halted and cannot be used for transactions.
DEACTIVATED MDES/SCOF network token is permanently deactivated and must not be used for transactions.
DELETED VTS network token is permanently deleted and must not be used for transactions.
